Voters go to the polls. Presto! "Where did that come from?" From the outside, it looks like magic. At least, that's what people tell us. And the results are pretty stunning from in front of the curtain.
We've helped pass taxes and defeat taxes. We've worked with reluctant voters to forgo automatic tax reductions. We've seen elderly voters in condo precincts come downstairs to vote for property tax increases for services that go to poor children in their county whom they will never, ever see. We've helped amend the constitution. We've orchestrated public support for the actions of public officials. We even got voters to give up their right to vote for School Superintendent.
Not many folks get to see behind the curtain when the magicians do their work, but it's all fairly straight-forward and logical. First we find the embedded, latent consensus. It's almost always there somewhere, we're just a little more practiced in knowing where to look. We work patiently with local leaders who are willing to stake their reputations - and often a chunk of their fortunes - on an outcome still very, very theoretical. Then we help fashion a message that draws out that consensus - breathing life and form into that nascent, potential agreement. The momentum builds from the inside-out, from the bottom-up ... often surprising cynical news people and seasoned observers. Then it all comes together. People in support of a common idea, a common vision, a common future.
The news people ask us how we made it appear. It was there all the time. It's logicalmagic. [go to public opinion research] |
